I found four desiccant packets behind the rear seatback today. The factory wouldn't do this, would they? There's a bunch of electronics mounted there, so I assume it is to keep them dry. No evidence of any water leaks, so I'm a little puzzled.

Seeburg, leave them right where they were placed. They have nothing to do with water leaks. Not sure where you live, but many places have high humidity, and that moisture can, over time, corrode both the electronic components as well as connectors. Desiccant cannot help water leaks, but it is effective against humidity.
