FX4 v. Towing Package

Reading the two packages, there are very few differences. What's to say the FX4 can't tow a bit more than 2000lbs. It includes the upgraded radiator and cooling fan but not the trans oil cooler and the upgraded drive ratio. First time truck buyer so take it easy on me. Coming from an AWD VW SUV.

There's also that the towing package comes with the 7-pin connection and brake controller which is legally required for towing over a certain weight.
I would think with the Maverick only having a 2.0 4 cylinder engine, the gearing ratio will be even more important with heavier towing objects.

277 lb feet of torque should be sufficient!

I opted for the FX4 and NOT the 4k tow package, because i'm stubborn. The XLT lux package already had a hitch/4pin and the FX4 had some of the upgraded engine protection. However, an integrated brake controller alone would cost $500, so for folks with certain plans to tow, the 4k tow package probably makes sense (even with redundancies).
Unless your truck comes with the "integrated" brake controller you will have to add one externally. You can get a nice brake controller for well under $500...👍
First-time truck buyer here, too. I ordered both packages. Was that a mistake? My hope was to make it as off road and rugged as possible given the choices.

No not at all. The 4k tow package isn't needed unless you are towing over 2,000#. Its not needed for off road ruggedness. The FX4 package has the off road equipment.

My complaint was that you are paying for some equipment twice if you combine the packages but only getting 1 piece of equipment. I haven't ordered a new car in many many years and just getting use to what is an extra charge in today's car world. For example I can't believe you have to pay for certain colors.

Am I correct that you get the 6.5" dash setup from the Lariat on the FX4 XLT? It seems to say this, but this is important to me so I want to confirm.

Correct. FX4 XLTs get the same style instrument cluster as Lariat trim.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the tow package gives you a heavy duty transmission and the trans oil cooler which is very important when towing.

Oh yeah, one other thing, I also opted for both packages as well.
No it should’ve caused a fault on the build sheet. With you wanting 4x4 it should automatically drop the tow package. Is the FX4 is 4x4 which comes with a better motor, transmission, gear ratio, upgraded cooling system and suspension. Your also paying for extra plastic on the FX4 unless they finally went with metal skid plates. I have a FX4 F150 and everyone gets on me saying that it’s not able to tow more than 6500. My dump trailer empty weighs close to 2 ton and I’ve pulled 8 tons without a problem. I’ve even hauled 10 tons of trailer and equipment through the mountains and only had one problem. Which was the last turn 10 mins away from the office and it was a really steep hill. I would’ve been fine if someone would’ve pulled out in front of me going up the hill
FX4 does give you the metal skid plates but makes it more time consuming for oil changes (might get charged more). Also you loose ECO mode and Sport mode.
It’s not that bad on mine I also rather have something there just in case. I have busted a few oil pans and transmission pans sliding over rocks or slip down to one I even pulled the step on rake move with a tree. That makes no sense to lose eco mode or sports that doesn’t affect anything it’s just adding 3lbs of protection. In my opinion eco mode is trash sport mode changes the shift points and the feeling of the steering wheel. Even with a custom tune eco is trash I burn way more fuel in eco mode and everyone else I’ve talked to has the same problem. I get better mi plus power that’s not anything crazy with a tow tune. Grant you I have a F150 FX4 with a 5.4l with some motor work with 8” lift on 37x13.5r20 and in eco I get 12mpg and in tow not tow trans only I can get up to 20mpg. Eco robs you of a lot of power causing you to give it more fuel to go up the smallest incline or to speed up by 5 mph. I’ve been turning eco mode off everyone’s trucks and cars and that stupid cut off and turn on every time you stop. The biggest improvements I’ve seen from turning them off is one the drop to 4 cylinders and back too 8. I’ve even noticed that they last way longer with a plus side of never having it get stuck in 4 cylinder mode. I use to hate computers and programmers but now that I’ve been playing around with them I love them and everything they will let you change
