Flashing or not the CMHSL will make little difference. The original tests on them used big city taxis fleets because taxi companies kept good records. These studies showed a reduction in rear end collisions of about 31%. But once the CMHSL was on new vehicles real world data showed a reduction in rear end collisions of only 4%.
Why the huge discrepancy?
What was on the back of those big city taxis? Billboards. Center mounted on the trunk lid. The CHMSL's were mounted just above the ads at the top of the billboard frame. Drivers saw this third brake light only because it was mounted where they were looking. The only reason they were looking there was because they were reading the ads.
The same 31% reduction of rear end collisions on taxis probably could have been accomplished simply by removing ads from the back of the taxis.

I never really look at or pay attention to the third brake light. I focus on the left and right sides of the rear rather than looking at the center. Why? Because that is also where turn signals are. In my opinion all rear turn signals (and hazards) should be amber. That way when a red light is seen the first and only thought any driver would have is 'brakes'.

You can buy those LED red light bars that plug into the trailer wiring and then install between the bumper and tailgate, not sure if they fit the mav or not but they provide a lot more illumination when braking.

Go to the Kahtec website. Several variations of what you are looking for. I have the blinking smart stop intelligent version on my Maverick now. Also had one on a 2010 Ford Fusion. No issues with mine. I disagree with what Mark Vice stated. The flashing feature is very noticeable to the driver behind it and often the driver behind him. My position is if you get rear ended one time, you are going to wish it was more apparent that you were braking.

Can anyone tell me what is involved with getting the red brake light over the bed to flash when I brake? These folks in Fort Worth don't seem to notice when I brake!
Add a hydraulic one of these to your bed and when someone is tailgating, lower it! When I lived among a bunch of farmers who had these in their pickups, that is what they would do! They said people backed off real fast!!!!

I ordered the bumper sticker: FLASHING LIGHTS = YOU’RE TAILGATING!!! Then I flash my 4-ways 4 times, then again maybe 10 seconds later if they don’t back off, then 6 times after that if necessary, etc.

I'd rather spit tobacco but I had a putz try to drag me out of my delivery truck with his hands around my neck because he claimed I slashed water on his car, I was driving a refrigerated truck they always have water coming out of them. This was Pompano Beach FL about 1975, God only knows what psyco's are out there now.
