What's the difference between the led lights on the xl vs larriats

Pretty sure there is no difference if you're talking about the headlights. They said the taillamps and what not are incandescent on the lower trims, so perhaps the "signature lighting" also changes this, but I'd wager they are probably just talking about interior lights.

It looks like the top portion of the Lariat headlights might light up whereas the top doesn't on the XL and XLT

XLT for example:

I just received the order guide from my dealer. Under the Lariat trim it clearly states signature headlights and incandescent tail lights. Once again Ford disappoints. As of the beginning of this year I vowed to not purchase any vehicle without LEDs all the way around. Maybe they’ll come around in 2023.

I'm not too mad about incandescent tail lights. It's obviously a thing because they needed to keep costs low and a separate tail light for the Lariat trim didn't make sense to R&D. Thankfully its easy to buy a set of VLEDs LED bulbs which don't error and swap them in for brighter. It also keeps the trims kinda consistent with the rest of the lineup, the Lariat 2021 F150 has the same halogen tail lights, gotta step up to a luxury trim for LED tails.

Maybe they'll add a King Ranch / Limited / Platinum trim with SYNC 4, Blue Cruise, LED all around, and whatever else in the years to come.

Not necessarily, on the Ram 1500 at least its a huge pain. Even with resistors wired in, half the people still get bulb out warnings as the canbus is so sensitive. It sucks!

In my experience Ford isn't as annoying. My 2016 Cummins annoyed me about LEDs too and I eventually switched them back to halogens but in my friend's 2021 F150 XLT he's running LED tails no issue.
Why are the tail lights incandescent on all models is my question.

Need to hit the exact same power consumption probably. Current can be measured with a multimeter.

My question is does anyone know how to install/add the additional top portion lighting on an XLT model? Wanted to buy the Lariat for the headlight look but honestly didn't like the interior color scheme.

From what I have been able to find, without replacing the entire headlight system, is at Bullseye customs he has a DRL light that he can add in that top section. It’s a skinnier & almost cheap looking light compared to the actual Lariat. There are also other DRL (lights) that you can purchase at oracle lights. Hope that helps. I’ve been searching high & low
