I drove a manual for 10 years before having to drive automatics. I feel I was a better driver when I had to shift, since I paid attention to driving more. I miss driving stick except when stopping on an uphill with a car behind me that's way too close.

That being said it's kind of silly to not buy a car because an automatic shifter, something you will hardly touch unless there's a manual mode, is different. We humans are silly though and buy or not buy things based on so many silly things.

I'm sure the Frontier is much better suited to you. Seems like a nice truck.
Yes to standard (fully synchronized of course) tranny's! This is the first time my main car has not been a standard.

Interesting reality to the shifter in the Mav. Wife found out if you shut it off before putting it in park it automatically goes to park!

Hey everyone, first post, and I expect it's going to be a controversial one. Not looking to start a fight or anything, I'm just guessing not everyone will agree with me on this.

I hope the modders here can help me find a solution.

I'm looking at replacing my (heavily modified) aging 2008 Jeep Liberty with a Ford Maverick. The price is right and for what it does it would functionally replace everything I can do with the Liberty (except the heavier off roading, but admittedly, I really don't do that anymore. No time.)

The thing that is holding me back is that thrice cursed rotary knob gear shifter.

I hate them.

What I am trying to find out is if anyone knows if the dial shifter can be swapped with a stick style shifter from another model of Ford truck or car? Like the Ranger auto shift stick? It is also a "fly by wire" CANBUS unit, it just uses a normal, highly tactile shifter stick. I just don't know if it's compatible and I'm not about to commit to a vehicle purchase just to find out.

Note that I'm perfectly fine with losing the "auto park" function. I never want the vehicle to do anything I haven't explicitly told it to do, so if I can hamstring that function in the process, all the better. If I have to mount a couple extra CANBUS toggle buttons to replace other functions of the Rotary, I can do that too. I have a drill. ;)

If it's absolutely not possible, then the Maverick may fall off my list of prospective vehicles. Yeah, the rotary knob is that big of a deal to me.

Normally I wouldn't even consider a vehicle that I was forced to do "quality of life" mods to right off the lot, but money is tight right now and the Mav fits my budget and needs. Almost everything else that fits is 10-20k outside my budget. (Still looking at the Jeep Compass, but it's got shit for towing capability) Also, I have to admit that the Mav just kind of twigs something in me. I like it. More than I expected I would. It's just... that KNOB... Grrrrrrr!

Recommendations for a swap?
would you rather have a push button shifter?

This is my first vehicle with the rotary gear knob. What I really miss is a place to rest my hand as I drive……..Enter Prototype # 1

Yes, it’s a fake gear shift. A T-handle from Advance Auto and some Shop Vac adapters that I had laying around the garage. I thought if this was viable, I would get it 3D Printed. I’m not completely sold on my idea, it’s a little too far away from the arm rest and is a bit awkward. Any feed back would be great, plus It needs a name: “Schtickshift, “Faux on the floor” (you see where I’m going here?) I’m sure y’all have some ideas.

Gotta get Ford to make a Mav with 6 speed standard so we can bang gears again!!!!!

Oh man, that is too cool!! Does the ver.1.0 turn the knob with a sure feel? Or turn at all?

It’s a snug fit on the dial, so it turns fine, part of my disappointment is that the dial itself has a small amount of runout (as it should) but the lever kinda amplifies that and gives it a loose feeling.

What difference does it make the "style" of it, as long as it works flawlessly? You turn it once at the start of your, and once at the end. It is not like you are constantly dealing with it.

In fact you don't have to do anything but turn off the key. The transmission is automatically put in PARK when the key is turned off. I would like to have Paddle shifters but nothing to do with the rotary knob

Living in Florida where the max elevation is probably 300 ft probably of little value to you. I routinely drive thru 7000 ft. elevation changes. Descending hills, in traffic, it's nice not to continually brake. I haven't found a practical way to down shift the 8 speed trans. to use engine braking. Can't comment on the CVT

Depends on the type of driving you do / type of job you have - you may use the shifter many times per drive or twice a day as you do. If people don’t like it then they don’t like it and may have a need for something better !! Caprice ??

From a driving perspective, this is the only complaint I have with the Maverick. I don't mind the dial shifter at all, but I wish there was a way to manually select/limit gears on the 8 speed.

I took my old 7.3 out today, and boy did it feel great to shift gears again(ZF6 baby!!!). But it didn't take long for me to miss driving the Maverick

Nothing like a bunch of HP and gobs of torque routed through a 4speed or Doug Nash 5speed. Yee Haw. Have a great New Year’s Eve fellow mavericks !!
