Driving a stick shift is really fun. Once you have done it, it's hard to drive automatics.
I have, and got tendinitis in my left hip from using the clutch trying to get in the gate at Cape Canaveral AFS on 9/12/01 with increased security and long line!!!

Depends on the type of driving you do / type of job you have - you may use the shifter many times per drive or twice a day as you do. If people don’t like it then they don’t like it and may have a need for something better !! Caprice ??

The double clutch transmission is the best of both world's; fuel economy of a manual, with the convenience of an auto. When I became a CVPOO (big rig owner-operator), I went with auto shift. I still shifted manually(but at lower RPMs than the computer would), but just by pushing a button, and no clutching. :D

I’ve personally never driven an auto shift, but I’ve heard from some that they can be a bit of a bear backing underneath a trailer, and when going through mud. They say the clutch tends to disengage at a bad time. What are your thoughts?

Well, I'm going for the EgoBruise and AWD. I would probably go for the hybrid if they offered AWD with it, but not yet apparently. See, what had happened was, I need the AWD for the inch of snow we get every other year that I don't drive in anyway (just in case), and the FX4 and tow package is for all the other scenarios I'll never find myself in. But I do get extra parts and a skid plate to make it harder to service, so that's nice.
Obviously none of you haters have driven the hybid in the snow. We had six inches here a few weeks back and the truck did fine. Note, that she's still just wearing the factory all-seasons. Doubt me? Check any of the many YT videos from Canadian hybrid reviewers. With snow tires, they plow through some deep stuff.
Caveat: What I've seen is on-road only and no steep hills.

I’ve had several explorers and other 4wd vehicles but the best vehicle I ever had for the snow was an 86 chevy celebrity ( no really !!) which had real snow tires. Couldn’t even do fishtails or drift for fun !!! It was amazing. I’m ny during 91-94 winters we had massive blizzards and I could go anywhere I pleased So I am a big fan of front wheel drive havnt hit the snow with my Mav yet but no apprehension. If it struggles I’m sure front snows will get it done ! For me no sense trading off the fwd hybrid economy for 4wd I’ll use twice a year also the Hybrid performance time wise is nothing to scoff at compared to the ecoboost Small turbocharged overworked motors are a repair waiting to happen you can argue that but not very effectively lol

I know what you mean. When we lived in Huntsville, AL for 19 mos. I had never experienced driving in winter weather. We had a rare ice storm. The entire town was shut down, like it usually did when there was just a chance of snow coming.

I wanted to try driving on ice in my 5 speed Isuzu P'up truck. NOBODY was on the road. After a few small hills, I reached a shopping center and tried to slide and skid. It was actually hard to do! I was quite surprised.

More recently, on a trip from FL to Portland, OR in late winter, watching the weather whilst heading straight west on I-10 until weather looked good for heading north, going as far as so. CA, going up I-5, with our 2WD F-350 long bed towing a 5,000 lb. travel travel trailer.

We headed north starting in Albuquerque. We spent the night in Salt Lake, and the next morning headed north going up the mountains. It started lightly snowing, but kept getting heavier. It got to the point of only the right lane being used, as about 6" of snow covered the left lane.

In front of us was an 18 wheeler followed by a car. So when the truck decide to pull over onto the shoulder instead of exiting at next exit, the car must have slammed on his brakes and swerved, as he apparently panicked, and spun all around and ended up on shoulder.

All I did was lightly brake, and slowed down enough. As I passed by, he had his thumb up thanking me for not hitting him. The funny thing is, he had Utah plates, so should have known how to drive
in such weather!

For me, I still had not really driven in snow up to that point. Now I have. :D

Hey everyone, first post, and I expect it's going to be a controversial one. Not looking to start a fight or anything, I'm just guessing not everyone will agree with me on this.

I hope the modders here can help me find a solution.

I'm looking at replacing my (heavily modified) aging 2008 Jeep Liberty with a Ford Maverick. The price is right and for what it does it would functionally replace everything I can do with the Liberty (except the heavier off roading, but admittedly, I really don't do that anymore. No time.)

The thing that is holding me back is that thrice cursed rotary knob gear shifter.

I hate them.

What I am trying to find out is if anyone knows if the dial shifter can be swapped with a stick style shifter from another model of Ford truck or car? Like the Ranger auto shift stick? It is also a "fly by wire" CANBUS unit, it just uses a normal, highly tactile shifter stick. I just don't know if it's compatible and I'm not about to commit to a vehicle purchase just to find out.

Note that I'm perfectly fine with losing the "auto park" function. I never want the vehicle to do anything I haven't explicitly told it to do, so if I can hamstring that function in the process, all the better. If I have to mount a couple extra CANBUS toggle buttons to replace other functions of the Rotary, I can do that too. I have a drill. ;)

If it's absolutely not possible, then the Maverick may fall off my list of prospective vehicles. Yeah, the rotary knob is that big of a deal to me.

Normally I wouldn't even consider a vehicle that I was forced to do "quality of life" mods to right off the lot, but money is tight right now and the Mav fits my budget and needs. Almost everything else that fits is 10-20k outside my budget. (Still looking at the Jeep Compass, but it's got shit for towing capability) Also, I have to admit that the Mav just kind of twigs something in me. I like it. More than I expected I would. It's just... that KNOB... Grrrrrrr!

Recommendations for a swap?
It took me about 30 minutes to get used to the rotary, really don't let that stop you.

It made/makes no difference to me either. You literally set it, go, and forget it. You don't even have to do anything until next trip, as when you park, you simply turn key OFF or push STOP, and gear shifter automatically goes into PARK. Could not be any simpler!:cool::cool:

Don't even have to touch it when you get out with the vehicle running...automatically goes to park when the drivers door opens!

One time I removed my seat belt when the AUTO HOLD was on, it went OFF and and it began rolling forward! Was not expecting that, and good thing I did not hit vehicle in front of me! 😜

Have you had a vehicle with the rotary dial shifter?
I'm in my 60s, had a lot oif different vehicles - manual and automatics shifters on the column and the console. This dial shifter took me abouit 2 days to get used to, it's fine.
There is a post on here where someone put a console lever type shifter from a F150 in there using forscan, a buttload of time - and a freaking jig saw. To each his own.
I think you'll get used to it before you have to fill the gas tank for the first time and it will be a non issue.
It's still just an automatic you put into P R N or D. And even that is still displayed just under the speedometer like always.

when something kicks the little rotary dial out of gear ( and it can be anything - barely any force necessary) you’ll see one of the things people are mentioning . If you check the rest of this specific chat you’ll see the rest. Great if you like it though

It doesn't do a damn thing to turn the dial, unless the vehicle is totally stopped, and your foot is on the brake.
